10 problems with traditional U.S. 3PL companies, and how Abanro solves them
Updated
Your U.S. warehouse should feel like your own warehouse, even when you're thousands of miles away. For many international sellers, a traditional 3PL feels like the opposite. Here are the ten problems we hear about most, and how Abanro, from Southern California, approaches each one differently.
A good U.S. logistics partner does far more than store boxes. It is your team on the ground: it receives your imports, protects your inventory, gets your units into Amazon on time and tells you what is happening before you have to ask. When that works, you can focus on product, marketing and sales. When it doesn't, every shipment becomes a source of stress.
This guide walks through the ten most common frustrations with traditional U.S. third-party logistics (3PL) companies. For each one, you will see what sellers usually experience, why it happens, and how Abanro, a Los Angeles area 3PL built for international sellers, does it differently.
Why international sellers feel these problems most
Many U.S. warehouses were designed for domestic brands: a customer who is in the same time zone, can visit the building, already has a customs broker and ships predictable volumes every month. International sellers are different. You are often eight to sixteen hours away, your first shipments may be small, your goods arrive by sea or air through a port you have never seen, and you depend on your warehouse for information you cannot check yourself.
That is exactly why Abanro exists. We are an operational presence in the United States for businesses based abroad, with our central warehouse in Orange County, Southern California, close to the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach and LAX, connected to warehouses across the country, and managed through Abanro Workspace, the dashboard that keeps you in control from anywhere.
1. Hidden fees and unexpected charges
The quote looked simple. Then the first invoice arrives with receiving surcharges, "special handling", packaging materials, account fees and labor billed by the hour. Many sellers only discover the real cost of their 3PL after their inventory is already inside it, when moving is hardest.
Why it happens
Traditional 3PLs often price a low headline rate and recover margin through line items that are hard to predict in advance. Fee schedules can run to several pages, and the terms that matter most are easy to miss.
How Abanro does it differently
- Transparent upfront pricing. Our published starting prices show what each service includes and what is billed separately.
- No hidden fees or unexpected charges. Your quote lists every service before your goods move.
- Competitive rates you can compare. Pallet storage from $49 per pallet per month, standard FBA prep from $1.20 per unit and pick and pack from $4.50 per order.
The result: you know your landed logistics cost before you ship, so you can price your products with confidence.
2. Expensive monthly minimums
A new brand sends two pallets to test the U.S. market and pays a monthly minimum built for a seller ten times its size. For international sellers starting out, these minimums can cost more than the actual work.
Why it happens
Many warehouses set minimums to filter out smaller accounts and guarantee revenue for space and staff, whatever the customer actually ships.
How Abanro does it differently
- No monthly minimum and no setup fee. You pay for the services you use.
- No minimum volume commitment. Start with a single box or ship a full container.
- Room to grow. The same team and the same Workspace support you from your first carton to your hundredth pallet.
The result: you can enter the U.S. market at the size that makes sense today, and scale when your sales say so.
3. Slow receiving and inventory check-in
Your container cleared customs a week ago, but your inventory still isn't "available". Amazon stock is running out, and nobody can tell you when your cartons will be counted.
Why it happens
Large warehouses process inbound freight in a queue. Small and international accounts often wait behind bigger customers, and receiving errors, such as miscounted cartons or unrecorded damage, surface weeks later.
How Abanro does it differently
- Close to the ports. Freight from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reaches our Southern California facility after a short drive, not a cross-country trip.
- Careful receiving and inspection. We count cartons and units against your packing list, check for visible damage and photograph anything that needs attention.
- Visible the moment it happens. Every receipt appears in your Workspace, so you can plan your next FBA shipment straight away.
The result: your inventory becomes sellable sooner, and you know exactly what arrived.

You ask for a stock count and get a spreadsheet three days later. Is it current? Which cartons are prepped? What shipped yesterday? With many 3PLs, sellers manage their most valuable asset almost blind.
Why it happens
Older warehouse systems were built for internal use, not for customers. Their portals, when they exist, often show limited data or update once a day.
How Abanro does it differently
- 24/7 access in Abanro Workspace. Stock by SKU, carton and location, with every receipt, adjustment and shipment recorded.
- The whole journey in one place. Pickup at origin, international shipping, customs clearance, receiving, storage, orders and final delivery to Amazon FBA or your customer.
- Control from anywhere in the world. Manage and monitor your U.S. inventory without chasing warehouse staff for updates.
The result: your products are in America, and you are always in control. Read more about Abanro Workspace.
5. Slow communication and unresponsive support
An email sent on Monday evening in Seoul or Istanbul reaches a U.S. warehouse after closing time. The reply comes two days later, if it comes at all. When a shipment is urgent, that silence is expensive.
Why it happens
Traditional 3PLs staff support for local business hours and route questions through shared inboxes or ticket queues, with no single person responsible for your account.
How Abanro does it differently
- 24/7 support. Our team is available around the clock, so answers reach you in your time zone.
- A clear commitment. We respond within 6 hours.
- Real people who know your account. The team that handles your goods is the team that answers you, by WhatsApp, email or in your Workspace.
The result: real people, real support, real control, whatever time it is where you are.
6. Amazon FBA labeling and preparation mistakes
A wrong FNSKU, a missing suffocation warning or a set that arrives as loose units. Amazon refuses, repackages or relabels the inventory, charges you for it, and your listing goes out of stock.
Why it happens
Since January 1, 2026, Amazon no longer preps or labels inventory for the U.S. FBA program, so every unit must arrive ready. General warehouses that treat Amazon prep as a side task are where most of these mistakes happen.
How Abanro does it differently
- FBA prep is core work for us. Amazon FBA prep, FNSKU labeling, poly bags, bubble wrap, bundles and carton labels, done to Amazon's requirements.
- Checked before it's labeled. We match every FNSKU to the right unit and cover old barcodes so only one code scans.
- Cartons built to Amazon's limits. Size, weight and box labels prepared for the fulfillment centers in your plan.
The result: Amazon FBA prep without the stress. See the 2026 Amazon FBA prep requirements for the details.

The warehouse says customs is not their job. The broker says delivery is not theirs. The forwarder points to both. Meanwhile your container sits at the terminal, and storage charges start to grow.
Why it happens
Traditional 3PLs start their work at the dock door. Everything before it, from documents and clearance to pickup at the port, is left for the seller to coordinate across several companies.
How Abanro does it differently
- No need to find your own customs broker. Abanro handles customs clearance for you, reliably and at competitive, transparent rates.
- One point of contact. From import preparation through clearance, receiving, storage and delivery.
- Every step tracked. Clearance and delivery to our warehouse appear in your Workspace with the rest of the journey.
The result: fewer handoffs, fewer surprises and one team accountable for getting your goods from the port to your customers. Customs duties, taxes and government charges are always shown separately.
8. Difficult returns management
Returned units pile up in a corner, nobody tells you which ones can be resold, and Amazon removal orders disappear into the warehouse without a report.
Why it happens
Returns are slow, manual and unpredictable, so many warehouses give them the lowest priority.
How Abanro does it differently
- Returns handled with care. We receive customer returns and Amazon removal orders, inspect each unit, restock what is sellable and set aside what isn't.
- Clear reporting. You see what came back and its condition, and you decide what happens next.
- Priced for your products. Returns processing is quoted to match your products and volumes.
The result: returned inventory becomes sellable inventory again, instead of a loss you never see.
9. Inflexible contracts and limited scalability
A twelve-month contract, early termination fees and a warehouse that cannot handle your peak season. Sellers who outgrow their 3PL, or simply want to change, often find themselves locked in.
Why it happens
Long contracts protect the warehouse's planning, not the seller's flexibility. And a single building has a fixed capacity, whatever your growth plans are.
How Abanro does it differently
- No long-term contract. Pay as you go for the services you use.
- Scale up or down. From a single box to full containers, without renegotiating your relationship.
- Connected across the United States. Our Southern California operation works with a network of connected warehouses across the country, so your logistics can grow with your sales.
The result: you stay with Abanro because the service is good, not because a contract says so.

When a delivery is refused, a document is missing or a buyer needs samples tomorrow, you need someone in the U.S. who can act today. Most 3PLs only move what is already on their shelves.
Why it happens
A traditional 3PL sees you as an account number, not a business it represents. It has no reason to solve problems outside its warehouse.
How Abanro does it differently
- Your team in Los Angeles. An operational presence in the United States that treats your business like its own.
- Help when things go wrong. Shipment Recovery for held, refused or stranded U.S.-bound shipments, and Export SOS when a deal or shipment is at risk.
- More than storage. Sampling, ecommerce fulfillment, forwarding and support for your U.S. sales, from one partner.
The result: your business deserves more than just storage. With Abanro, you have people in America working for you.

How to choose your U.S. logistics partner
Before you send your first shipment, ask any provider five questions: What exactly will I pay? What happens if I ship less next month? How will I see my inventory? Who answers when I write at night, my time? Who handles customs and the trip from the port? The answers tell you whether you are buying space on a shelf or a partner for your U.S. business.
