How to source products in the USA without importing your own inventory
Updated
A practical guide to U.S. manufacturers, wholesale suppliers, private label sourcing and fulfillment for international businesses.
Entering the U.S. market does not always mean shipping inventory across an ocean.
For international brands, distributors, Amazon sellers and entrepreneurs, importing products can involve international freight, customs duties, brokerage fees, regulatory requirements and weeks of planning. When a business wants to test a new market with only a few products, these costs can make a small launch uneconomical.
There is another approach: source products that are already available or manufactured in the United States.
With the right sourcing partner, businesses can compare American suppliers, negotiate purchase terms, arrange domestic delivery, and connect their products to U.S. fulfillment services.
What is U.S. product sourcing?
U.S. product sourcing is the process of identifying, evaluating and purchasing products from American manufacturers, wholesalers and authorized distributors.
Depending on your business model, you may choose:
- Wholesale branded products: purchase genuine products under their existing brands for resale, subject to distribution rights and marketplace approval.
- Private label products: work with manufacturers that offer products under your own brand.
- Contract manufacturing: have a qualified manufacturer produce a product according to agreed specifications.
- Domestic procurement: purchase products already available in the U.S. for distribution, ecommerce or retail operations.
Abanro helps international businesses research suppliers, compare quotations, coordinate purchasing, and connect approved inventory to U.S. logistics and fulfillment.
Importing vs. sourcing within the United States
| Consideration | International import | U.S. domestic sourcing |
|---|---|---|
| International freight | Generally required | Generally unnecessary for domestically available inventory |
| U.S. customs clearance | Required for imports | Not needed for the domestic purchase itself |
| Import duties | May apply | No new import duty from a purely domestic transaction |
| Supplier minimums | Varies | Varies |
| Product customization | Depends on manufacturer | Available through qualifying manufacturers |
| U.S. delivery | After import clearance | Domestic logistics |
| Regulatory obligations | Import and product rules | U.S. product, labeling and sales rules still apply |
Domestic sourcing does not mean every product was manufactured in America. Some inventory may have been imported earlier by another company. It also does not automatically eliminate FDA, USDA, labeling, tax, trademark or Amazon compliance requirements.
If importing is still the better route for your product, Abanro can arrange your U.S. customs clearance and receive the shipment.

Step 4: Approve the purchase
Once you approve the commercial terms, procurement can be coordinated according to the agreed scope of service.
Product costs, deposits, purchasing fees, freight and other charges are confirmed before an order is placed.
Step 5: Receive and fulfill in the U.S.
Inventory can be delivered to an approved fulfillment partner for receiving, inspection, storage, labeling or shipping.
Depending on the product and selling channel, fulfillment may include Amazon FBA preparation, Amazon FBM order fulfillment, Shopify orders or wholesale distribution.
Example: starting a pet food business in the U.S.
Imagine an international entrepreneur wants to test the American market with 100 units of pet food.
Importing an initial shipment may involve customs costs and additional regulatory complexity.
Instead, the business could investigate two domestic sourcing options:
Option A: Existing U.S. brands. Source sealed products through suitable wholesalers or authorized distributors and resell them under their original brands, where permitted.
Option B: Private label production. Ask American pet food manufacturers to quote existing formulas under the customer's brand, including packaging, label requirements and minimum production runs.
These are different commercial models. Retail arbitrage or wholesale resale does not automatically provide authorization to sell a brand on Amazon, while private label orders may require much higher minimum quantities.
Pet food is also regulated. Applicable FDA, state, labeling, registration and distribution requirements must be checked before sale.
Wholesale or private label: which is better?
Existing-brand wholesale sourcing may be better for testing demand without developing a new product.
Private label may be more suitable for businesses building their own brands, provided they can meet the manufacturer's minimum order quantity and product compliance requirements.
Neither model guarantees lower costs or marketplace approval. The right choice depends on the product category, budget, volume and sales strategy.
Why combine sourcing with fulfillment?
Finding a supplier is only the beginning.
After purchasing inventory, businesses need a reliable way to receive, store, prepare and ship products.
